Medway 57 Sevenoaks 5

12 Feruary 2006

Medway kicked off with the slope and a bitter wind in their favour, and took an early lead when Tom Bourne finished a fast wing-to-wing passing movement through the backs.

But Sevenoaks then enjoyed their best period of the entire match, forcing Medway back into their own half and keeping them there for ten minutes.

Cold fingers contributed to some poor handling and missed tackles and Sevenoaks went close to scoring on both wings, but were unable to put points on the board.

Then from a scrum on their ten-metre line, Stockford and Verrall worked a switch in midfield that created a gap in the Sevenoaks defence, and Verrall took full advantage to power through and score under the posts.Four minutes later Stockford contributed a fine individual try, running in from the half-way line. Bourne then took a pass in his own half and set off and with his pace, downhill with the wind behind, nobody was
going to catch him.

Verrall converted twice in the half to give Medway a 24 - 0 lead at half time.

With the elements now in their favour, Sevenoaks clearly had hopes for getting back in the match and started the second half brightly. After three minutes they won quick ball from a ruck and moved the ball wide. Three tacklers took out the ball carrier, but the ball was offloaded and there was a big gap for a Sevenoaks back to dive into the corner.

Medway stiffened their defence and before long they were back in the Sevenoaks half, with Verrall making a strong run through the middle and under the posts.

Bourne then completed his hat-trick with a determined run in from 40 metres, touching down in the corner with two defenders hanging off his back. The try finally broke Sevenoaks' resistance, and Medway ran in three more in the next five minutes.

A lengthy series of rucks and mauls moved all along the goal line before Jelfs took control and dived over. Verrall scored his third with another driving run through the centre. He converted three of the second half tries before Stockford ran in the last and drop-kicked the conversion to make the final score 57 - 5.
